Chenarestan-e Tehran
Oriental Plane tree is the official tree of Tehran. It has been planted by the City of Tehran on most streets for decades. Plane tree has been native of Tehran for hundreds of years. The Leaf of Oriental Plane is city's symbol and used in their publications. Four centuries ago Plane trees of Tehran were described by European diplomat as follows (from encyclopaedia Iranica):
The Italian diplomat Pietro della Valle, writing in June 1618 about then village of Tehran, Says:
“All streets are shaded by planes, which in Persian they call it cinar; big, luxuriant and handsome. And I must say I have not seen in all my life any bigger or more beautiful. Many of them are so thick that two or three men could not embrace them.”

In spite of the fact that"Plane tree has been native of Tehran for hundred of years"I do not know why the city of tehran tend to replace these trees by other kinds of trees such as:Locust-ree (known as Japanese Acacia),etc.
Unfortunately,these attitude had a bad effect on other Iranian cities.for instance,nowadays in
some northern cities of Iran you can view lots of locust-trees instead of(sour)orange trees.

@Reza:
1 — Locust trees (actually from North America, Gleditsia triacanthos var inermis) can thrive in urban environments that are too dry or with soil too compacted for the healthy growth of chenar (Platanus orientalis).
2 — Sour orange Citrus aurantium), while beautiful, evergreen and fragrant, is also prone to several fatal diseases, as well as being messy with fruit drop, both of which are bad traits for a tree in a public place.
Additionally, sour orange trees have low tolerance for the same things chenar do: dryness and compacted soil. Even worse, they cannot tolerate high soil alkalinity, a particular problem in cities, especially in new and highly built-up areas with lots of young concrete.
My point is that as lovely as chenar and sour orange are, there are places within cities where they are inappropriate to plant because they will not thrive. THis requires the identification and use of alternative species such as locust, Chinese scholar tree (Styphnolobium japonicum, formerly Sophora j.) and the beautiful flowering Chitalpa(xChitalpa tashkentensis).
Which is the preferable scenario: lots and lots of dying chenar everywhere, or perhaps fewer but healthier chenar supplemented by many healthy locust and other sorts of appropriate urban trees?
When our towns had dirt or rocked roads lined with irrigation channels, chenar could thrive. They are not so well adapted to concrete sidewalks, high-rises and tarmac roads (although they should continue to do well in parks and other open areas, especially if supplemented with irrigation)
A last point: monocultures of any sort are disasters waiting to happen. Look what occurred in England and North America when Dutch Elm disease showed up: 90% of the trees lining streets, public squares and parks were American or English elms, so 90% of the mature trees of almost every city were wiped out within one generation.
It is always wiser, with trees as with people, to encourage a wide variety of types rather than relying on a single well-behaved sort. :-)
PS — It appears that rather than being native to Tehran for "hundreds of years", chenar have been growing along streams of the Qazvin-Tehran plateau (and back into the south-facing Alborz foothills) for many hundreds of thousands of years. Meaning, they've been around a whole lot longer than we have!
